Moraine Lake and the surrounding peaks at sunrise in Banff National Park

Banff is a mountain town inside Banff National Park, Canada’s oldest national park, in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. The park is known for its turquoise lakes, glaciers and wildlife, with famous stops at Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and the Icefields Parkway. Most visitors stay in the town of Banff, with its hot springs, gondola and Banff Avenue shops, or in the quieter Lake Louise area about 45 minutes west.

International flights land at Calgary International Airport (YYC), about 1.5 hours by car from Banff and about 2 hours from Lake Louise. The local currency is the Canadian dollar, and a Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in the park. Summer, from June to September, is the best time for hiking and lake views, while winter brings skiing from about December to April. The road to Moraine Lake is closed to private cars, so visitors reach it by shuttle or tour.
