Sandy beach with palm trees beside a calm lagoon in Rarotonga, Cook Islands

The Cook Islands are a group of 15 islands in the South Pacific, between Tahiti and Samoa, and self-governing in free association with New Zealand. Most visitors stay on Rarotonga, the main island, around Muri Beach and its lagoon or on the quieter west and south coasts. Many add a few nights on Aitutaki, known for its wide turquoise lagoon and small motu islets.

International flights land at Rarotonga International Airport (RAR) on the north coast near Avarua, about 20 to 25 minutes from Muri and 10 to 15 minutes from the west coast. Domestic flights to Aitutaki take about 50 minutes. The local currency is the New Zealand dollar, used alongside local Cook Islands coins and notes. The drier, cooler season runs from about May to October, and cyclone season from November to April.
