Puerto Plata Resorts & Tours

View of the Puerto Plata coastline and green mountains from the sea

Puerto Plata is a province on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, often called the Amber Coast. It combines a historic port city, with Victorian buildings and a cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, with a string of beach towns. Most visitors stay in the gated Playa Dorada resort area, around Cofresí and Maimón Bay to the west, or in Sosúa and the kitesurfing town of Cabarete to the east.

International flights land at Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP), between Puerto Plata and Sosúa. It is about 15 to 20 minutes from Sosúa, 25 to 35 minutes from Playa Dorada and 45 to 60 minutes from Maimón Bay. The local currency is the Dominican peso, and U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. It is warm all year, and hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
