The Pyramids of Giza rising from the desert near Cairo, Egypt

Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Arab world, spread along the Nile River. Across the river, Giza is home to the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, the last surviving wonder of the ancient world. Most visitors stay in downtown Cairo and on the Nile banks around Garden City and Zamalek, or in Giza near the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Most international flights land at Cairo International Airport (CAI), northeast of the city, about 30 to 60 minutes from downtown and 60 to 90 minutes from Giza, depending on traffic. Sphinx International Airport (SPX), west of Giza, is about 30 minutes from the pyramids. The local currency is the Egyptian pound. The most pleasant season runs from about October to April, while summers are very hot and dry.
