West Bay beach and turquoise water on Roatán, Honduras

Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, set on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. It is known for its diving and snorkeling, its white sand at West Bay and its laid-back dive town of West End. Most visitors stay around West Bay and West End on the western tip, while quieter resorts sit along the north and east coasts.

Flights land at Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB) near Coxen Hole, about 20 to 30 minutes from West Bay and West End. Many visitors arrive by cruise ship at Mahogany Bay or the Coxen Hole cruise port. The local currency is the Honduran lempira, and U.S. dollars are widely accepted. The drier months run from about March to August, the rainier season from October to January, and hurricane season from June 1 to November 30.
