The village of Bellagio on the shore of Lake Como with wooded hills and mountains behind

Lake Como is a long, Y-shaped lake in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, ringed by mountains, historic villas and old lakeside villages. Most visitors stay in Como town at the southern tip, or in the central lake villages of Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo and Menaggio, which are linked by passenger ferries.

The nearest major airport is Milan Malpensa (MXP), about 1 hour by car from Como town and about 1.5 to 2 hours from Bellagio. Milan Linate (LIN) and Milan Bergamo (BGY) are also within about 1 to 1.5 hours of Como town. The local currency is the euro. Spring and early fall are the best times to visit, summer is warm and busy, and many lakeside hotels close from about November to March, when Como town is the easiest base.
