Green headland meeting the blue sea at Castelsardo on the north coast of Sardinia

Sardinia is a large Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea, west of the mainland, known for its clear water, white-sand beaches, granite coastline and ancient stone towers called nuraghi. Most visitors stay on the Costa Smeralda and around Olbia in the northeast, in the walled port town of Alghero in the northwest, or in and around Cagliari, the capital, in the south.

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) is about 10 minutes from Olbia and about 40 minutes from Porto Cervo. Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) is about 15 to 20 minutes from central Cagliari, and Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO) is about 20 minutes from Alghero. The local currency is the euro. The beach season runs from about June to September, and many coastal resorts close from about October to April, while city hotels in Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero stay open all year.
