Gondolas moored on the Grand Canal in Venice at sunset, with historic palaces along the water

Venice is a city of canals and small islands in northeast Italy, built in a lagoon on the Adriatic Sea. There are no cars in the historic center, so people get around on foot, by vaporetto water bus and by gondola. Most visitors stay in the San Marco, Dorsoduro, Cannaregio and Castello districts, or on the Lido and Giudecca for a quieter base.

International flights land at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) on the mainland, about 20 to 30 minutes by road from Piazzale Roma, or about an hour by boat to San Marco. The local currency is the euro. Spring and fall bring mild weather, summer is hot and busy, and high water (acqua alta) can flood low areas, mostly between October and January. Browse hotels and tours in Venice below, from gondola rides and St. Mark’s Basilica visits to Murano and Burano boat trips and walking tours.
