Kyoto is Japan’s former imperial capital, known for its Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, Zen gardens and the old geisha district of Gion. Many visitors stay near Kyoto Station for easy train links, downtown around Shijo and Kawaramachi for shops and restaurants, or in Higashiyama and Gion to be close to the historic streets.

There is no airport in Kyoto. Most international flights land at Kansai International Airport (KIX), about 75 to 90 minutes away by train or car, while Osaka Itami Airport (ITM) handles mainly domestic flights and is about 50 to 60 minutes away. The local currency is the Japanese yen. Spring cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn leaves (mainly November) are the busiest times, summers are hot and humid, and winters are cool and mostly dry. Browse hotels and tours in Kyoto below, from Gion geisha walks and e-bike rides to Fushimi Inari hikes and day trips to Nara.
