Masai Mara Resorts & Tours

Dry grass plains dotted with balanites trees in the Masai Mara, Kenya

The Masai Mara is a large savanna reserve in southwest Kenya, on the border with Tanzania’s Serengeti. It is one of the best places in Africa to see lions, cheetahs, elephants and the Great Migration. Most visitors stay in tented camps and lodges inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve, in the Mara Triangle in the west, or in the private conservancies along the reserve’s northern edge.

International flights land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. From there, most travelers take a 45- to 60-minute bush flight from Wilson Airport to one of the Mara’s airstrips, such as Keekorok or Mara Serena, or drive about 5 to 6 hours by road. The local currency is the Kenyan shilling, and U.S. dollars are widely accepted at camps. The Great Migration usually reaches the Mara from about July to October, and the long rains fall from about April to May.
