The Bay of Kotor in Montenegro seen from the old town walls, with mountains rising above the water

Montenegro is a small country on the Adriatic coast of the Balkans, known for the fjord-like Bay of Kotor, walled old towns and mountains that rise straight from the sea. Most visitors stay around the Bay of Kotor, in Kotor, Perast and the Porto Montenegro marina at Tivat, or on the Budva Riviera, which runs from Budva past Becici to Sveti Stefan.

Tivat Airport (TIV) is the closest airport to the coast, about 15 to 20 minutes from Kotor and about 30 minutes from Budva. Podgorica Airport (TGD) is about 1 hour from Budva, and many visitors also fly into Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) in Croatia, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Kotor including the border crossing. The currency is the euro. Summer, from June to September, is hot and busy, May and early autumn are quieter, and some beach hotels close in winter.
