Sand dunes of Maspalomas on the south coast of Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the third-largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, in the Atlantic off the northwest coast of Africa. It is known for the Maspalomas sand dunes, a mountainous interior around Roque Nublo and mild weather all year. Most visitors stay in the sunny south, around Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Meloneras, Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the island’s capital in the north, has the long city beach of Las Canteras.

International flights land at Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) on the east coast, about 25 to 30 minutes from Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas, about 45 minutes from Puerto de Mogán and about 20 minutes from Las Palmas. The local currency is the euro. The south is warm and dry most of the year, with winter highs around 70°F (21°C), so winter is the busiest season.
