Victoria Falls, with the Zambezi River pouring over the cliff into the gorge

Victoria Falls is one of the world’s largest waterfalls, where the Zambezi River drops into a narrow gorge on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Locally it is called Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders,” and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors stay on either side: in Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe, close to the main viewpoints, or in Livingstone in Zambia, along the upper Zambezi River.

Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe is about 20 to 25 minutes from Victoria Falls town, and Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) in Livingstone is about 15 to 25 minutes from most Zambian hotels. U.S. dollars are widely used in Zimbabwe, and the Zambian kwacha is the currency in Zambia. The falls are fullest from about February to May, while the dry season runs from about May to October, and low water from about September to December is best for rafting.
