About El Conquistador Resort

El Conquistador Resort sits on a clifftop in Fajardo, on Puerto Rico’s east coast, where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean. It is a large independent resort, formerly run by Waldorf Astoria and Wyndham, with rooms spread across several buildings and a hillside village of casitas.

What sets it apart is the variety: a seaside water park, a private island beach reached by the resort’s ferry, golf, a marina and more than 20 restaurants and bars. It suits families who want plenty to do without leaving the resort.

The main resort is on a cliff and has no beach of its own. Instead, guests take the resort’s ferry to Palomino Island, a private island with a calm white-sand beach, water sports and a bar and grill.

At the resort there are four outdoor pools and a children’s pool, and the Coquí Water Park, with a lazy river and water slides, is free for resort guests. A full-service spa offers treatments at extra cost.

Activities and entertainment

The resort has an 18-hole golf course designed by Arthur Hills, three tennis courts, a 24-hour fitness center and a private marina. The Casa Blanca lounge offers adults-only cocktails and live entertainment in the evening.

Puerto Rico is warm all year. December to April is the drier, busier high season, while May to October brings more rain. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

Beyond the resort, Fajardo is the main departure point for catamaran trips to the offshore cays and for kayak tours of the bioluminescent lagoon, and El Yunque rainforest is about 30 minutes away.

Who it’s best for

  • Best for: families who want a water park, island beach days and a long list of activities.
  • Consider another resort if: you want to walk from your room onto the sand, or stay close to San Juan.

Getting there from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is about 34 miles west of the resort. The drive takes 55 to 70 minutes depending on traffic.

Taxis are available at the airport, but most guests book a private transfer in advance so a driver meets them at arrivals.
