Sugarloaf Mountain rising above the blue waters of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is Brazil’s best-known city, set between green granite mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Its famous sights include Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado, Sugarloaf Mountain and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. Most visitors stay in the South Zone, in Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, close to the beach, or further west in Barra da Tijuca.

International flights land at Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport (GIG), about 45 to 60 minutes from the South Zone hotels, depending on traffic. Santos Dumont Airport (SDU), right in the city center, handles mostly domestic flights and is about 20 to 30 minutes from Copacabana. The local currency is the Brazilian real. Rio is warm all year: summer, from December to March, is hot and humid with afternoon showers, while winter, from June to August, is milder and drier.
