Aerial view of a turquoise lagoon and coastline in southwest Mauritius

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, known for its lagoons protected by a coral reef, its white sand beaches and its green, volcanic interior. Most visitors stay on the east coast around Belle Mare, on the north coast around Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches, or on the west and southwest coasts around Flic en Flac and Le Morne.

International flights land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in the southeast, about 45 to 60 minutes from the east and west coast resorts and about 1 hour 15 minutes from Grand Baie. The local currency is the Mauritian rupee, and euros and U.S. dollars are accepted at many hotels. The cooler, drier months run from about May to November, and the cyclone season from about November to April.
