Cusco & Machu Picchu Resorts & Tours

The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu with Huayna Picchu mountain behind it, Peru

Cusco is the former capital of the Inca Empire, set high in the Andes of southern Peru at about 3,400 meters (11,150 feet). It is the gateway to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Most visitors stay in Cusco’s historic center around the Plaza de Armas and San Blas, in the Sacred Valley around Urubamba and Ollantaytambo, or in Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu.

Flights from Lima land at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ), about 15 to 20 minutes from the historic center and about 1 to 1.5 hours from the Sacred Valley hotels. Machu Picchu is reached by train to Aguas Calientes and then a short bus ride, so book entry tickets and trains well ahead. The local currency is the Peruvian sol. The dry season runs from about May to September, and the rainy season from about November to March.
