Red tiled rooftops of Lisbon at golden hour

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, a hilly city on the north bank of the Tagus River known for its tiled facades, yellow trams, fado music and viewpoints called miradouros. Most visitors stay in the central neighborhoods of Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto, along Avenida da Liberdade, or in Alfama below São Jorge Castle. Belém, to the west, is home to many of the city’s best-known monuments.

International flights land at Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), about 7 km north of the center and around 20 to 30 minutes from most hotels by car. The local currency is the euro. Spring and fall bring mild, pleasant weather, summers are hot and dry, and winters are mild with more rain. Browse hotels and tours in Lisbon below, from tram and tuk-tuk city tours to food tastings, sunset cruises and day trips to Sintra and Cascais.
